  2. Several things spring to mind. Either buy a sponge mop (the ones that squeeze out with the aid of a lever) and take the sponge off, replacing it with the wood (I think there are holes in them that would take nails or screws). Or you could shop around the hardware stores for a cheep broom handle, but you would need to make a hole in the centre of your piece of wood wide enough to accept the diameter of the pole.     This would last you many years, where to metal sponge handle would rust.
